The Problem of Being a Football School

After every "bad" loss (had we lost to Louisville by 2 in regulation, I doubt anyone would have called it such), you get moronic posts like this by people who come out of the woodwork to trash the program after ignoring every successful game. They don't know basketball, don't have any understanding of the ups and downs of the college game, and have little to no respect for the differences between the program in its current state compared to where it was in the 90s.

It happens on every message board just like those for other schools. One of the nice things about running a basketball-only blog is that I get a lot of constructive comments with very little emoting. Props to those of you who have contributed to this.

In fairness, there are some good places out there for ND basketball discussion. For the most part NDNation's board does a good job, though there is some overreacting after games (both wins and losses). I don't post there, but do read the board from time to time. If you can sift through the trash, there is some very good information. A good post by one of the most respected members headlines the board as an indication for what NDNation tries to accomplish.

It's not always great, and it's frequently very frustrating, but it's part of being the second most respected sport at a school.

BEING THE SECOND MOST RESPECTED TEAM AT THE SCHOOL IS ONLY PART OF IT, WE'RE ALSO THE SECOND MOST RESPECTED BASKETBALL TEAM IN THE AREA. MANY I.U. (BOBBY KNIGHT) FANS MAKE UP OUR FAN BASE. HAVING THE HOUSE FULL AT THE SETON HALL GAME WITH NOT MANY STUDENTS, I THINK SHOWS THAT THE TIDE IS TURNING. EVEN IF SOME POSTS SEEM MORONIC, ITS BETTER THAN NO POSTS. KEEP THOSE YELLOW SEATS FULL AND THE PROGRAM MOVING FORWARD. SOME GOOD PASSIONATE BITCHING IS A GOOD THING.

Not sure if you meant to capitalize the whole thing, but point taken anyways.

The last two years we've seen a big improvement in local turnout. A couple years ago, there were only two sellouts even with an unbeaten record at home. Last year against UCONN and this season against Georgetown, we were able to create a loud environment without the students. Big difference.

It's frustrating, but you're right. I'd rather have criticism, constructive or overwise, than just plain apathy.

Thanks for your insight - again - Black and Green. I think we (posters)try to advance our points in a thoughtful, respectful manner. I am an X's and O's guy who enjoys looking at different things the great coaches in the Big East, and believe me they are great, are doing on defense. Georgetown's hybrid was something that caught my interest. Syracuse's zone is legendary. Pitino's pressure was relentless and obviously a product of practice and teaching. Despite the decline of the NBA (I have no interest), the college game remains a smorgasbord of different styles and strategy. I enjoy the discussion. As a former D-1 player it is somewhat discouraging to see players bashed. I can say with some certainty that the players want what we want - great performances every night and all wins. Regrettably, it doesn't always work that way.
