West Virginia BET In-Game

Go Irish. Beat Mountaineers.

EDIT: WHY ARE WE PLAYING ZONE? Ruoff just hit a wide-open three pointer and the defense has done nothing to stop scoring inside. Offensive rebounding, the reason we lost last time, is much much easier against the zone than man defense. Dumb coaching.

This is starting to look like a fitting end to a pathetic season. Coach, please stop clapping and encouraging your team for this embarrasing performance. Get in someone's face and make them realize that lazy defense and free passes on the boards are unacceptable.

On the offensive end, this is the Washington State game from last year. Bad shot selection, no good cuts on offense, I've never been more embarrassed to watch a Notre Dame team.

If Notre Dame held its basketball team to the same standard as football, Brey would be fired tomorrow morning. And I'd be very hard-pressed to say he got a raw deal.

I couldn't agree more..... This is pathetic! Brey is lost!! \

It happens every year, how long do we have to put up with this bullshit?

I disagree that Brey would be fired if basketball was held to the same standard as football, but that's more a comment about keeping a football coach who went 3-9 not too long ago.

I've been a Brey supporter for a very long time, but this is unacceptable. More on that later.

Brey's had more time than Weis, and about as much success. This could be Weis's last year if we don't show signficant improvement; I would find it hard to believe that Swarbrick won't give Brey a similar ultimatum in April.

I guarantee he will get an ultimatum at the end of the year. However, the question is if you really think there will be significant improvement next season.

Our effort in the second half has given me some hope. Let's finish the last four minutes with heart.

"Significant improvement" depends entirely on the schedule the Big East gives us. If they give us a TV-attractive schedule like this was, well get hammered. If they give us a softer schedule, we might have a shot. But I do not see Brey as someone who can make us a consistent Sweet 16 team, or a regular challenger for the Big East. Time to start thinking about the future.

It was heartening to see us play tough in the second half after getting pushed around so much early.

Outrebounded by 25, gave up three pointers at a 55% clip, just a poor effort on both ends of the floor most the of the night. I think things will get better, but you're right about how the schedule could impact our results next year. There is simply no reason to believe we can perform at a top level against "A" competition right now.

If basketball were held to the same standard as football... we'd presumably not be in the dire straits we are now regarding facilities, and we would have a more realistic idea of Brey's ceiling at an elite program.

I sorta get the feeling that Brey and/or the team lost this game trying to save something for Pitt.

Ever see the truly wretched facilities that hockey has? Or even fencing? They seem to do pretty well despite them.

Now, if basketball practice facilities are really a problem, it's no wonder that Swarbrick has supposedly moved them to the top of his to-do list. One wonders if he's doing so to give them (and women's basketball and volleyball) the facilities they deserve, or whether he's removing an excuse from Brey's arsenal, or just getting things better for the next guy. I'd say the first, but...

Brey playing the facility card is pretty weak. last I saw the basket is 10' from the floor wherever you play. Mike needs to worry about getting some tough minded players in who could care less about how nice the practice facility is. Mike needs some players who wouldn't mind knocking someone up against the wall in the pit.

Comparing basketball facilities with fencing and hockey is apples and oranges. If you've been in the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, you know what a huge difference that makes when compared to the Pit. Top-notch recruits take all these things into account.

Of course, that's no excuse for this season. West Virginia recruits at the same level we do, but they just pushed us around for most of the first half. Then there was little chance of coming back. Talent is one big part of the equation, but it doesn't excuse the current season.

It chafes me when coaches dip into their tried and true bag of tired excuses. Poor practice facilities is always a favorite. Next we'll here whispers about how Admissions is hurting the program. These guys are making north of $1M per year. You are the HC of Notre Dame. Figure it out. Muffett figured out how to get the best player in the country to enroll, despite the practice facility. All she does is get it done, year in and year out. You don't hear her complain or make excuses. When her team does not perform she sugarcoats nothing. She is superior to Brey as an in-game coach - not even real close.
