Offseason Posting, Part III

Eric Atkins commits, our first for 2010. There are bigger fish in the sea, but its nice to know we at least have one point guard lined up.

EDIT: ESPN is much higher than on him that the other two major scouting sites. Their profile on him sounds very positive. Coach Brey really used his Baltimore connections well and grabbed a very solid player. Still waiting to hear back froms guys like McCallum, Irving, and Buie, but Atkins would not be a terrible starting point guard if he ends up being the de facto replacement for Tory Jackson.

Read this for more on what the guy's about. Very mature, a must for a guy who may be expected to start from day one. He'll make a good Domer. If he can gain a litle strength to go with the great quickness and solid defense, he could be a pretty solid player as well.

Well - he has an ESPN rating of 90 which is higher than both Buie and Irving... and he was the Baltimore Catholic School league player of the year as a junior. If we could round out this class with two of an Irving, Droney, Brust, or Harris, we'd be looking pretty good.

I'm just glad we have a fast, defensive point guard that can apparently score at will in the lane to replace Tory.

Great news.

It is good news. Having read ESPN's write-up on him, I feel a lot better than I did with just the profiles on Scout and Rivals. He's very quick, a must-have, and plays solid defense.

Heard Kopko beat him in the gym this weekend. If he doesn't have maturity as a freshman, and he is not as fast as Tory by far, what does he offer?

This was a comment from someone at ND Nation. It's a first hand account, but take it fwiw... "Got a call today from a friend whose son played basketball at Gonzaga in DC with Ty Thornton, 2010 point guard who has committed to Duke. When asked who he thought was a better point- Eric or Kendall Marshall (the O'Connell point who has committed to North Carolina, Thornton stated that without question it was Atkins. Apparently they played on a summer team with each other. My friend also has seen him play a couple times and speaks very highly of his play -- great speed and handles."

anonymous, assuming what you heard is even true, kopko is probably 20 or 21 and been in a college program for 2 years. atkins is a 16 or 17 year old high school junior. i wouldnt put too much stock into some guys fooling around in a gym in late april.

Marquette has the #1 class in 2009 and already a better class than ND in 2010. Haha. Ya'll are DONE.

Marquette has outrecruited ND for years, no shock there. In the four years that the Warriors have been in the Big East, they have finished ahead of ND twice... so I'd hardly say we're done.

If Notre Dame put the same emphasis on basketball as Marquette, we'd pull in better classes. Maybe not at the same level (Mike Brey's no recruiting genius), but better.

The Irish don't have the same academic freedom as Marquette (see Dominic James) or their own football team. Quite frankly, it's not an even playing field, though most of the fault lies on campus.

That said, Notre Dame has had success in the past with lesser talent before and the more I read about Atkins, the more I like him. It's possible that he will wind up as highly ranked as Jackson by the end of next year. While he may not be the kind of can't-miss guy that Scout or Rivals gives 5 stars to (see McCallum and Irving), he is a solid choice to fill the point guard slot for ND.

Also, keep in mind that Jackson was a three-star recruit on Rivals a few years ago.

Tory Jackson's Rank Among PGs in 2006: 18th
Eric Atkins: 20th

Marquette made the tourney each of the last 4 years. ND did not. Stop trying to pretend.

what are we pretending? maybe because there is nothing else to do at marquette than watching basketball makes it a little easier for you guys.

Haha...are you implying that South Bend has more going for it than Milwaukee? Get Real.

Anonymous said...

OH, I forgot you guys have a world class football team. My bad.

No, I was implying that the University of Notre Dame has alot more going on than Marquette. Despite football's recent struggles, we get 80,000 people watching every weekend. Our hockey team was ranked #1 in the country for most of the year. Our baseball team went to the college world series a few years back.

What does Marquette have? Basketball, that is it. There is nothing else there.

That was my point, Einstein.

Last time I checked, this was a basketball message board. Have fun in the bottom of the Big East once Gody is GONE! He's a hell of a player, but to be frank, your talent does not come close to matching up without him.
